Little Facts

  • The sound is created by the lip vibration in the mouthpiece

  • Until 1820 there were no valves, only a single note. The valves open new tubes that change the path of the air and thus create new notes.

  • If you bend the trumpet apart, you get a tube length of 137cm.

Little Facts

  • The "bass" in our ensemble

  • Comparable to a tuba, it was modified by Mr. Sousa in the 1980s in such a way that the bell points forwards in order to direct the sound to the listeners

  • Likewise, the sousaphone, unlike the tuba. worn around the body rather than in front of it

  • The air has to travel 580 cm from the mouthpiece to the bell

  • The oldest known sousaphone dates from 1893

Little Facts

  • The drum, which is covered with skin on both sides, is often supplemented with a hi-hat on the frame of the drum (as shown in the picture).

  • On the underside there is a sound carpet made of metal wires, which produces the distinctive "snarling" of the drum when playing

  • The choice of drumsticks, especially their head shape, also influences the sound.
